Problems with your feet and ankles can affect everything, from you ability to work and stay active to your ability to live independently. SIH’s podiatric foot and ankle surgeons are trained to care for the full range of foot and ankle conditions, from chronic pain and sports injuries to complex reconstructive surgery and limb-saving care.

Our podiatric surgeons (DPMs, or Doctors of Podiatric Medicine) specialize exclusively in the foot, ankle and lower leg. That focused training means they bring deep surgical experience to conditions that other specialties may treat less frequently. For patients facing complications from diabetes, circulation problems or severe structural deformity, that depth of focus is important.

Conditions We Treat

Treatments and services

Forefoot surgery

We treat deformities and pain affecting the toes and ball of the foot. Procedures include bunion correction (including minimally invasive techniques), hammertoe and claw toe repair, Lapidus fusion, plantar plate repair, metatarsal osteotomies, Morton’s neuroma excision, hallux rigidus surgery and ingrown toenail surgery.

Midfoot surgery

For conditions affecting the arch, including arthritis, collapse and injury. Procedures include midfoot arthrodesis, Lisfranc fixation or fusion, bone spur removal, tendon transfers and Charcot foot reconstruction.

Rearfoot and ankle surgery

Our surgeons perform the full range of advanced rearfoot and ankle procedures, including ankle arthroscopy, fracture repair, lateral ankle ligament reconstruction, flatfoot reconstruction, total ankle replacement, ankle arthrodesis, and subtalar and triple arthrodesis.

Tendon and soft tissue procedures

Including Achilles tendon repair (acute and chronic), gastrocnemius recession, posterior tibial tendon reconstruction, peroneal and anterior tibial tendon repair, plantar fascia release and excision of soft tissue masses.

Trauma and fracture care

Management of foot and ankle fractures, crush injuries, dislocations, nonunion and malunion correction, and post-traumatic deformity reconstruction.

Wound care and limb salvage

Our team provides advanced wound management including surgical debridement, incision and drainage, bone debridement for osteomyelitis, negative pressure wound therapy, skin grafts and bioengineered tissue substitutes. For patients at risk of amputation, we work with vascular surgery and infectious disease to coordinate limb-saving care whenever possible.

Conservative and non-surgical care

Not every condition requires surgery. We also offer foot and ankle injections, custom orthotics and taping, and non-surgical management for many common conditions.

Diagnosis and evaluation

Getting the right diagnosis is the starting point for effective care. Our evaluation process may include:

  • Physical exam, including gait analysis, range of motion testing and assessment of skin and nail health
  • X-rays, MRI, CT scans and ultrasound
  • Weight-bearing CT for complex deformities
  • Neurologic testing for peripheral neuropathy, including monofilament and vibration testing
  • Vascular assessment including ankle-brachial index (ABI), toe pressures and Doppler ultrasound
  • Laboratory testing for infection, inflammation and diabetes management
  • Bone biopsy and nerve conduction studies when indicated
